2006
2006 was a satisfying year. It began with a trip to Esperaza in France with close friends of ours who had bought a house there and who wanted Raul (my partner) to paint a mural for them. A beautiful area steeped in history: it encompasses Rennes le Chateau made even more famous by Dan Brown's novel 'The DaVinci Code', Carcasonne with its religious significance concerning the Cathars and the village where Nostradamus lived for years. Esperaza itself has a market on Sundays which is heaven for anyone interested in colour, shape and rural life.
This trip was followed by an exciting three days working with the V&A to exhibit work on Cuba both at the Museum and at a day funded by the Lord Mayor of London on Trafalgar Square.
August brought a trip to Sault in Provence to photograph the annual lavender festival there and to get to know the lay out of the fields of flowers for a return trip in 2007. Stunningly beautiful countryside with a long experience of providing most of the world's lavender. If you are interested see www.provenceguide.com to learn more about it.
Three weeks in Peru crowned the year with trekking in the jungle along the Amazon, time in Cuscu adjusting to the altitude before ascending Machu Picchu then on to Lake Titikaka and the Nascar Lines. The people and the markets were a treasure trove of colour, shape and kindness to the eye and to the soul. A magical country poor in places beyond belief but accepting of life and humanity and rich in community in a way many European countries have forgotten. Not enough time there I would love to go back.
In between all of this were three exhibitions and the race to process all the images taken whilst away, running the gallery and moving my Mother to Wales! A good year.
2005
November saw us in Cuba again. Lucky to be married to a Cuban and therefore visit people and places that I might never otherwise know existed. This was my second visit to Cuba and I loved it even more this time than before perhaps because I have begun to understand the country and the people a little better. The people are incredibly kind and inclusive; I find them beautiful both in appearance and in their souls. It is, of course, a photographer's dream with its colour and its seeming decay.
